SALFORD DECIDES ITS 2019 LITERARY HERO AT 16th ANNUAL BOOK AWARD
The 2019 Salford Children’s Book Award Ceremony took place on 15th March, at the University of Salford.
Over 100 11-14-year-olds from secondary schools across Salford got to meet their literary icons, with four authors of the shortlisted books attending plus regular host, author and comedian, James Campbell.
This year for the first time, a number of year six children from local primary schools also attended the event. The shortlisted authors and pupils discussed the books on the stage, before revealing this year’s winner – The 1,000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford.
This year’s event was held for the first time at the University of Salford (New Adelphi Building) as part of Salford Community Leisure’s ongoing partnership with the University.
The Salford Children’s Book Award, which is run by Salford Schools’ Library Service with support from Salford Libraries, is designed to introduce schoolchildren in Salford to a wide range of books and authors, to promote that reading is fun and enhance literary development.
The five outstanding books were sent to participating schools to read over the course of six months and at the end of this period, students voted for their favourite titles from the selection.
Naomi Lewis, Libraries and Heritage Development Manager for Children, Families & Schools at Salford Community Leisure, said:
“Well done to Ross Welford for being the winning author and to the children for voting for all the shortlisted authors. For 16 years, Salford Schools’ Library Service has been encouraging Salford pupils to love reading through the Salford Children’s Book Award. This year we are delighted to welcome year six pupils to the event at the new venue.”
The 2019 shortlist was:
The Extraordinary Colours of Auden Dare by Zillah Bethell; Twister by Juliette Forrest; Kick by Mitch Johnson; Sky Thieves by Dan Walker; The 1,000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford.
