Member Spotlight: How CAN-Move Helped Karli Rediscover Fitness After Her Cancer Battle
This month’s Member Spotlight CAN-Move feature is shining a light on one of the most incredible programmes under the SCL umbrella; the CAN-Move Programme. CAN-Move is an incredible programme that assists people impacted by cancer (whether that be those currently undergoing treatment, or those whose cancer is in remission) stay active by offering a number of safe and effective physical and exercise opportunities which are open to anyone who has had a cancer diagnosis. The programme aims to manage and improve many treatment side effects, such as fatigue, mood and well-being and aims to help to prevent recurrence. Another huge benefit of the programme is the social benefits that the participants reap. CAN-Move has a real community feel and provides plenty of peer and social support too. The team offer support by providing professional advice regarding suitable exercise prescription, and goal setting.
And so, to our member in the spotlight. Meet Karli Durrant, an inspiring SCL member based at both Swinton& Pendlebury and Worsley Leisure Centre. Karli has been an SCL member for over 7 years, however not all of that time has been smooth-sailing. Following treatment for Breast Cancer in 2021, Karli joined the SCL Active Lifestyles CAN-Move Programme, in March last year, after seeing it advertised, as she thought it would be a great, safe way to get back into the gym and back to feeling more like herself, following her treatment.
What Karli Said About Her Experience with CAN-Move
I joined the programme and began to attend a number of the CAN-Move sessions and started to use the gym again. Throughout, I was following an exercise programme tailored for me, so it was safe for my health needs, which all helped to build up my strength and energy levels. I particularly enjoyed the circuits and Tai Chi classes and the Well-Being Walks. The combination of different classes and regular guided gym sessions really helped me to continue to enjoy exercise whilst adjusting to life after cancer treatment.
Now I’m an SCL member again outside of the CAN-Move programme, I mainly use the gym, following the workouts set for me during my time in the CAN-Move programme, plus I continue to enjoy the benefits of circuits and Tai Chi.
As my fitness has improved, I have recently attended a Tabata class, and the instructor Danielle has been really helpful in advising me how to continue to further modify the exercises to suit my needs after surgery. I’m looking forward to getting back to attending a wider variety of classes again, as my health and fitness continue to improve!
Karli, has recently taken part in two amazing challenges this autumn, all to raise money for The Christie Hospital. At the start of September, she completed The Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge, covering 28 miles from point to point in just one day. Then two weeks later, climbed Mount Snowdon! Absolutely incredible achievements! From everyone at SCL, we wish Karli all the best on her fitness and recovery journey!
You can be referred into the CAN-Move programme by your cancer care team or your GP, and self referral is also possible. You can find out more about the CAN-Move programme at the links below!
