At Salford Community Leisure, our mission is to provide a wide range of accessible and affordable services that promote active living, cultural engagement, and community spirit. Whether it’s taking part in sports, enjoying arts and culture, or simply spending time with friends and family in one of our local venues, we are dedicated to making Salford a better place to live, work, and play.

About our Organisation

Salford Community Leisure (SCL) is a dynamic, not-for-profit organisation committed to enriching the lives of the people in and around Salford through sports, leisure, culture, and well-being. We are passionate about fostering inclusive, healthy, and vibrant communities, ensuring that every individual has access to the opportunities and services that support physical and mental health, creativity, and personal development.

SCL is registered under the Co-operatives and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014. An independent legal entity, separate from Salford City Council, Salford Community Leisure Limited is a community benefit society with charitable status. SCL Trading Ltd (company reference 8623304) is our business face and incorporates operations such as catering and retail. This is a wholly owned subsidiary of the main company and all of its profits are reinvested because leisure and culture should be at the heart of every community.

The Board of Directors ensures that Salford Community Leisure conducts its affairs in accordance with its purpose as outlined in the Rules of the organisation.

Setting the policies, strategies and objectives, the Board also supervises the Chief Executive. The board is accountable to the members through elections and the power of removal. It has full legal responsibility for running the business.

Two executive directors; Sarah Robertson, Chief Executive and Ray Higson, Director of Finance and Support Services sit on the Board alongside five non-executive directors:

  • Deborah Ivill
  • Ross Griffiths

Community Membership

We our owned by our members – customers, employees and local residents – who direct and support our mission to “get everyone active.”

Our Community Membership incorporates:

  • Salford Community Leisure (SCL) employees
  • Library members
  • SCL Gym Members that use our leisure centres on a regular basis

Plus… a broad selection of community members and volunteers that represent the varying needs of our community and make sure we have the strongest voice in the city when it comes to leisure and culture.

  • Do you share our charitable and co-operative values and principles?
  • Do you want your voice to be heard?
  • Do you want to contribute to the design and delivery of community leisure services
  • Do you want to do business with us knowing that your money is being re-invested back into services for local people?
  • Do you want to be consulted on new projects, facilities and activities?

Each member holds one membership share of 1p. All members are invited to attend our Annual General Meeting (AGM)) with everyone over 16 and over able to vote. For those that are looking to get more involved, why not stand for election as a community representative on our forum? Or you could be one of the 1,000 members that sit on our online Leisure Advisory Board (LAB).
