If you’re not a regular swimmer already, here’s some top benefits to why you might want to add a dip in the pool to your exercise routine, as recommended by Vicky Connor, Assistant Sports & Leisure Manager at SCL.

‘The beauty of swimming is that it is suitable for all ages and there are benefits for newbies and seasoned athletes alike.’

Here are Vicky’s top benefits:

Switch off from the world

When you swim, you have many things to keep your mind occupied: your breathing pattern, how many laps you’ve completed, and how close that speedy lane swimmer is getting to you. Keeping track of all of these factors means that you should have little space in your mind to think about your worries outside the pool whilst you’re counting up those laps.

Feel energised and feel good

Nothing beats a swim session early in the morning to feel great before starting a workday. Our pools open at 6am perfect for your early morning energy boost. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times a week alongside a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy and feel positive.

Exercise without the sweat

If the thought of turning beetroot colour after a gym session fills you with dread, then get out of the gym and into the pool. You’ll never feel sweaty no matter how hard you work because the water keeps you cool!

Burns those calories

A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just half an hour, more than double that of walking. Swimming is a full body workout too – it engages almost every major muscle group, requiring a person to use their arms, legs, torso, and stomach.

Lowers the risk of diseases

As well as being a great form of cardiovascular exercise, swimming just 30 minutes a week can help to guard against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
