Sunday 3rd October was a very special day for some of the MAPAS Youth Orchestra members who had the fantastic opportunity to rehearse alongside the renowned BBC Philharmonic orchestra at the Lowry theatre their MediaCityUK studios.

During the event, Chief Conductor Omer Wellber took time to talk to the children in detail about the music that they would be playing, the history of it and the emotions it was designed to invoke. Following this the orchestra then joined the children for a two-hour rehearsal followed by a 30 minute performance, the first time that the BBC Philharmonic had played to a live audience since March 2020.

Discussing the experience following the event, Tina Parsons Head of Service at MAPAS commented,

“I was so proud of our young people, they really held their own. The children weren’t at all phased by their surroundings, grasping the opportunity to speak to the musicians about the music, their profession and about whatever else sprung to mind!”

Everyone at Salford Community Leisure would like to thank the BBC Philharmonic for the opportunity that they have provided for the young members of the MAPAS Youth Orchestra, an experience we’re sure they will never forget.
