History says libraries are places that demands silence. However, if you were to walk into a Salford library Coffee Morning today, you would find a thriving community, that’s lively and full of conversation.
This charming and welcome atmosphere can be found in spades at Irlam Library. That is just one reason a group of self-appointed “gossiping grannies” come together every Tuesday to meet, have a brew, and chat. We spoke to the ladies about why they chose Irlam Library as their venue and how it’s deepened their connection to the library and their community.

We started it pre-covid. Back then, we used to meet on a Friday. Then, post-covid when discussing which day would be better, we all agreed on a Tuesday. However, due to track and trace rules, we had to come up with an ‘official’ name. So we settled on Gossiping Grannies…not that we ever gossip – of course.
Well we had no choice really. Neither the church or the community centre wasn’t available, so we ended up at the library. It worked out for the better for us though since most of us are widows, so to have a warm and welcoming space with a fantastic librarian was just ideal. We’re a mixed age group too, so it’s nice to have that variety. As we meet weekly, it keeps us in a routine. it’s something to look forward to and an incentive to get up and crack on with the day.
We all want to support our local library. As the saying goes, if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. More than that though, it’s the company you get from coming. We can come to the coffee morning and grab our books at the same time. We get most of our books from the library and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, the librarian is always there to help.

Very important, especially for children. It’s not the same as it was back in the day. You don’t have to be quiet for starters. It’s a centre for learning. It’s amazing to see all the different activities taking place on a daily basis. For us, it’s the perfect place to enjoy good company and have a coffee.
It’s just easy to lose yourself in a book, especially if you live alone. It’s a good way to clear the mind.
We also spoke to Susie, library assistant at Irlam Library who had this to say about the Irlam Coffee Morning group.
They are a lovely group of ladies . I always look forward to see them and they liven the place up with their energy.
