Regular visitors to Little Hulton Library, Barbara and Michael are a couple who’ve found more than just great books among the shelves; they’ve discovered a welcoming community and a place to unwind together.
Barbara – I have always been a library user, even as a child I used the library.
Michael – I started coming with Barbara and once we started visiting more often grew to appreciate the sense of community we had here.
Barbara – Well, I don’t really watch telly, because I love to read. I’ve always got a book on the go. The library here just has a wonderful atmosphere to it.
Michael – I don’t read as much as Barbara. I like to take my time with my books, but it’s a good escape.
Michael – Historical, like Simon Scarrow and anything looking at the Roman period and the Vikings. Every now and then, I’ll read the odd detective book and I think I’ve read every Western book in the collection.
There’s a lot of knowledge in historical fiction. The authors have to do research into the area they’re covering, so you learn a lot of facts as you read. A lot of the time you don’t even realise you’ve picked up on the information; it’s a really good way to learn! There’s a craft in working non-fiction elements in a fictional setting.
Barbara – I’ve got a long list. My favourites are the World War 2 sagas. I find it interesting exploring the social side of war. Reading is such a brilliant escape. I find it just helps you de-stress from life and relax.
Michael – for adventure fiction I’d recommend Clive Cussler, for Roman Historical Fiction, Simon Scarrow. You get to watch the characters grow up in those books.
Barbara – Rosie Goodwin is great for sagas and Sophie Kinsella is my go to for something light-hearted.
Barbara – It’s so important. Libraries are great community hubs and once you step through the door you’ll keep coming back. All it takes is one book to get you hooked. We’re trying to get our grandchildren interested. There’s loads for kids here, especially when you see how many different activities they have going on.
Michael – It’s a peaceful place to go to. There’s a strong sense of community and the staff will always make time for you. It’s convenient for people to get to, especially when it’s on your doorstep. It is not just about reading either. There’s so much going on at the library, so I always find I have a good reason to go.
