Every year, schools in Salford are able to introduce their pupils to a diverse range of books, genres and authors, all while  saving thousands of pounds, by subscribing to SCL’s Schools’ Library Service.

What does the Schools’ Library Service offer?

The Salford Schools’ Library Service, based in Ordsall Library, offers schools the chance to create and borrow bespoke yearly, termly, and specialist library collections, tailor-made to match the learning needs of the pupils that each collection serves.

Borrowing the books not only gives schools the opportunity to save thousands of pounds per year, but also means that schools can more regularly update their collections, so that their libraries remain fresh and relevant to the topics currently being studied. Something, we believe helps keep children more engaged and motivated with their reading.

As well as lending books, the service can provide the following services to subscribing schools:

  • Advice on developing your school library
  • Telephone helpline during opening hours
  • Email bulletins
  • Networking meetings for the librarian or teacher in charge of the school library*
  • Participation in the Salford Children’s Book Award*

*For Secondary Schools

Salford’s Schools’ Library Service plays a vital role in supporting reading, learning, and creativity across the city’s classrooms. By providing carefully curated books and expert guidance, the service helps teachers inspire a love of reading while enhancing the curriculum for pupils of all ages. We spoke to Kathryn Pugh to explore how the Schools’ Library Service contributes to the students’ reader development and supports schools in fostering confident, engaged readers.

We also asked Kathryn what advice she’d give to other schools thinking of taking advantage of the Schools’ Library Service, and whether she thought the service was worth the money. Here’s what she had to say;

Opening hours

  • Monday – Thursday  8.30am – 5pm
  • Friday  8.30am – 4.30pm

We are open as usual during all school holidays, except Christmas.
