The programme aims to use the magic and inspiration of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to get children active.

Schools, community groups or families can set up teams for children to take part. Teams are challenged to log their physical activity on the Path to Paris website. Every activity logged is converted into a distance which helps teams travel around the world to reach Paris in time for the Olympic Games! Along the way, teams can unlock different prizes, resources and videos – all inspired by Team GB and Paralympics GB athletes!

Path to Paris is funded by Sport England (and by Spirit of 2012 in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Through the programme, as well as engaging schools, youth groups and sports clubs directly, Team GB and ParalympicsGB are working with a range of national partners to ensure that they reach the most inactive children and their families.

In partnership with GM Moving, Salford Community Leisure (SCL), have worked alongside Salford City Council and Salford Schools Sports Partnership, to secure additional funding to help support the project by delivering intensive, locally designed physical activity opportunities for children in local Salford schools.

Stephen Gordon, SCL Active Communities Development Officer said:

‘We are thrilled to be supporting the Path to Paris programme. Getting local children involved in Physical Activity is so important for their physical and mental health and projects like this are a great way to get communities involved and provide additional opportunities to what they may usually have access to.’

On Thursday 25th January SCL representatives attended a countdown to the games event to launch the programme and highlight a 6 month countdown to the Olympics. The event highlighted some of the activities teams can take part in to help them make the virtual journey around the world to Paris. The event was attended by children from Light Oaks School, who were lucky enough to meet Path to Paris Athlete Ambassadors Javier Bello – Team GB Volleyball, Ashley Facey – ParalympicsGB Table Tennis and Beth Munro – ParalympicsGB Taekwondo.

Dean Gilmore, Partnership Development Manager for Salford Schools Sports Partnerships was at the event and commented ‘We will be launching Path to Paris, in conjunction with SCL, to 60 schools across Salford. We are hoping they will all get involved to get their children, their families and their communities engaged in all the fun activities, and virtually make the trip to Paris in time for the Olympics’

Path to Paris provides a fantastic opportunity to bring positive change into all aspects of children’s lives, all while bringing families, school communities, and wider communities together. At SCL we are looking forward to following Salford teams progress over the next 6 months.
