SCL Dance is proud to celebrate the achievements of two of our talented dancers, Lucy and Freya, who were nominated for the International Theatre Dance Awards; one of the UK’s most prestigious dance competitions and the flagship event of the IDTA.

Each year, over 7,500 candidates enter IDTA examinations, with only around 500 achieving nominations for these highly regarded awards. Lucy and Freya earned their place among this elite group after achieving outstanding marks in their Grade 5 Theatre Craft exams, placing them in the top 10 percent of performers nationwide.

SCL Dancers at IDTA Awards

Representing SCL Dance, Lucy and Freya travelled to Telford to take part in audition-style workshops, where they showcased their skill, dedication and passion for dance. Although they did not progress to the finals, both dancers delivered confident performances and truly shone on stage.

Their stories:

Lucy and Freya both joined the SCL Dance School when they were just 2 and a half years old. Since then, they have both excelled, winning medals, awards and trophies across the northwest as part of our Theatre Dance Competition teams, with Lucy previously representing SCL at Street Dance competitions and Freya at Freestyle competitions too.

Elsewhere within SCL, Freya and Lucy have also performed in  MAPAS Musical Theatre productions; including the recent production of Elf the Musical Jr at Salford’s Adelphi Theatre.  Freya and Lucy have passed through our SCL Dance Volunteer Programme and they are now casual dance teachers, passing on their technique and performance skills to the next generation of Salford’s dancers under the guidance of our core team.

As for what’s next? Lucy and Freya are looking to take the next steps in their careers; Lucy has just been awarded the lead role and Freya an ensemble dancer within their college productions. We look forward to supporting them on their next steps as they look to pursue Musical Theatre and Dance Degrees in the near future.

SCL has been a big part of my life. From starting off in baby ballet, to getting top marks in Grade 5 Theatre Craft and competing against the top 10% of the country. While representing SCL, has been one of my greatest achievements so far. To be able to represent SCL, knowing it’s the place where everything started for me is a real honour. The friendships I’ve made with the other dancers is something that will never be forgotten. SCL has always been family to me and I will be forever grateful for the experiences and friendships that it has given me.

I’ve been dancing at SCL School of Dance since the age of two and I have always absolutely loved it. I’ve made so many friends, who I know will be my friends for life! We’ve shared so many experiences in exams, competitions and shows. I am very proud of all that I have achieved whilst dancing at SCL, from high marks in all exams, and consistently achieving top 3 places and extra awards at Theatre Competitions, to being selected to dance at the IDTA Theatre Awards.  I’ve loved the family feel and support I’ve received from my friends and teachers at SCL, and know what I have learnt here I will take with me into the dance stage of my performance journey at university.

A comment from SCL School of Dance Principle, Louise:

It has been a privilege to see both Freya and Lucy flourish within our classes and become outstanding dancers and performers, I am very proud of them both. They have been dedicated and determined dancers; always willing to listen, improve and learn. Their success is a tribute to this. Their stories inspire our young dancers, and it is great to see them both passing on their enthusiasm, skill, and love for dance on to the next generation of SCL dancers. We cannot wait to hear about their next steps in their dancing journeys.

We could not be more proud of Lucy and Freya. From the whole of SCL, well done to you both!
