Salford Community Leisure are proud to celebrate 10 years of their CAN-Move service, supporting anyone living with or beyond cancer to become more physically active and improve their wellbeing.

When you are living with cancer or have been previously diagnosed with cancer, being physically active can help you make a positive change to your life.

We know people may be a little nervous about building up activity levels, particularly if it’s for the first time or if you haven’t been active for a while, but the CAN-Move team are there to support you, with specific health related advice and activities

Our CAN-Move service has recently celebrated their 10th birthday with a celebration lunch at Ordsall Hall, attended by current and past members of the programme.

We spoke to attendees who told us the programme changed their lives in many ways, and they didn’t just benefit from the physical activity but also from the social aspect of the programme.

George who completed the programme nearly 10 years ago, still finds the benefits from the group:

‘I found the programme absolutely fantastic and made quite a few new friends from it. Everyone has the same interest and something in common. It really was exceptional and such a fantastic service. The trainers are brilliant and everyone is so friendly, it was about having fun as well as getting active. It is just what you need!’

Gwynn, who currently attends the programme said:

‘Always a relaxed atmosphere and you feel comfortable talking to people because you know that they know what you have gone through. You get the exercise that you need and the team know what they are doing so you are not overdoing things and getting the activity that you need. I have made some wonderful friends. Mentally it is a massive support as well as physically.’

The CAN-Move team work together with a range of Health Professionals in secondary and primary care ranging from Cancer Nurse Specialists, Physios, GP’s and Practice Nurses, to help embed exercise and physical activity into a patient’s cancer care pathway.

Cheryl, a Salford Colorectal nurse said:

‘The CAN-Move team always offer an excellent service to our patients. They always contact the patients and update us on anything they are working on with the patient. I think it is amazing and we will always refer our patients to this service to support them through their cancer journey.’

Referral to the programme can be made through your Cancer Nurse Specialist, GP, Practice Nurse or other Health Professional. Self-Referral is possible.
