For people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), finding a form of exercise that is safe, enjoyable and adapted to suit their needs can make a significant difference to both physical and emotional wellbeing. One activity that ticks these boxes, and continues to transform lives across Salford and Trafford is Seated Dance. In Salford, seated dance sessions are delivered by SCL Dance in partnership with Greater Manchester Southwest MS Society.
For over 10 years, SCL Dance and Greater Manchester Southwest MS Society have worked together to provide inclusive seated dance sessions designed specifically for people living with, or affected by, MS. The classes have become a valued part of many participants’ weekly routines, offering not only exercise but also friendship, confidence, a community to become a part of, and a sense of achievement that comes every week when the class in complete.

Seated Dance is a highly adaptable, low-impact form of exercise that can be tailored to suit all abilities. By performing movements while seated, participants can enjoy the benefits of physical activity without adding any unnecessary stress to their lower limbs. The sessions focus on improving upper body strength, core stability and flexibility, while also helping to enhance posture, balance, mobility and coordination.
Research has shown that regular movement can play an important role in managing the symptoms of MS, and seated dance provides a fun and engaging way to stay active. Participants often report feeling more energised after a session, with improvements in mood and a reduction in feelings of fatigue. The combination of music, movement and social interaction can also support mental wellbeing and help reduce feelings of isolation.
Another key benefit of seated dance is its ability to stimulate the brain through coordinated movement and rhythm. This can help support neuroplasticity; the brain’s ability to create and strengthen neural pathways. This benefit of dance is particularly important for people living with neurological conditions such as MS.
Beyond the physical and cognitive benefits, the class has developed into a welcoming and supportive community. Participants regularly connect, encourage one another and celebrate achievements together, creating friendships that extend beyond the weekly sessions.
The group’s enthusiasm and dedication have led to invitations to perform at a number of special events over recent years. Highlights have included a memorable performance at the Greater Manchester Southwest MS Society’s 60th Anniversary celebrations, as well as a showcase at a recent MS Society Information Day. These events provided an opportunity for participants to demonstrate their routines, inspire others and highlight the positive impact that seated dance can have on people living with MS.
To ensure the sessions remain accessible to as many people as possible, the class is currently delivered online via Zoom. This allows participants to join from the comfort and safety of their own homes, removing barriers such as travel and making it easier for people across Salford, Trafford and the wider area to take part.

Members of the group spoke to use, to tell us about the ways that they benefit from taking part in seated dance.
For Suzanne, being able to join the group remotely is a huge benefit, as it means she can save valuable energy for the session.
One of the things I really miss since my MS has restricted my mobility is dance, so it was brilliant to hear about this group. I like that I can connect with others remotely as it saves the effort of getting to a venue, which means I have more energy to dance. My brain is challenged to learn new routines, and we can have a laugh when it doesn’t go to plan! I love being part of the dancing gang and really look forward to the weekly sessions. It’s such a friendly and welcoming group!

For Janet, the session has become the highlight of the week.
Thursday is my favourite day of the week because of this class! It is a great way to exercise. Rachel does a different routine each week, so there’s a variety of music too! It just puts you in a good mood for the day ahead
Janet
While for Tamara and Tracy, it is the sense of connection and community that they gain from the group, that they have come to value.
Dancing connects us with our own bodies, feeling the music, moving in our own way, and enjoying it with others. Definitely the best way to start the day
Tamara
I look forward to Thursday every week, I’ve made some wonderful friends, and we all know how each other feels with MS and encourage each other to keep going. We all love seated dance with Rachel; she keeps us motivated with the music and her routines, it keeps our brains going!
Tracy
