Libraries are so much more than just buildings filled with books; they’re spaces where stories come to life in more ways than one!

New mum Lynsey recently discovered just that when she stepped through the doors of Winton Library with her baby daughter, Nova.Since their very first visit in December, when Nova was just three-and-a-half months old, the library has become a much-loved part of their weekly routine.

“I love the community feel that there is here”

We spoke with Lynsey, to hear about her and Nova’s recent experiences at their local library. With baby-friendly groups, held throughout the week and bonding over books, their story highlights how libraries support families from the very beginning.

Read on to find how this mother-and-baby duo found comfort, connection, and community at Winton Library.

How long have you been coming to the library?

We’ve been in the area for around two years, but only started visiting Winton library in December when Nova was around 3.5 months old. Since then, we’ve been coming twice a week as part of our routine.

What do you enjoy about the library?

I love the community feel that there is here! For Nova, it’s the Books and Rhymes session on Tuesdays! It was the first ever group she came to and she was mesmerised by it. At first, she would just watch, but now she’s really immersed in the session and a lot more sociable.

What’s been the biggest benefit from coming to the library?

For Nova, I’d say it’s the social elements, and also the books have helped develop her hand eye co-ordination. For me there’s the community connection; being able to talk to other parents, and being able to use the technology. I’ve been able to work on a few projects on the PCs in the library.

Most of all though, it’s the bond that’s developed between us as parent and child. We come to the library and interact with one another through singing together in Books & Rhymes.

What would you say to someone that’s never been to the library before?

It’s not just books, you can come in with your children and play with the toys as well! As a new mum, it’s been a lifeline to be able to come to the library and meet new parents that can understand the experiences you’re going through.

I loved the guide for Winton library online. It made it easier to plan the journey and to know what to expect when you came to the library.
