Amber, Keleigh and Olivia have each gained distinctions as their final outcome which is reward for their hard work.
Throughout their apprenticeship they have achieved qualifications in First Aid, NPLQ Lifeguard, Level 2 Swimming Teacher, Level 2 Gym Instruction as well as gaining qualifications in Maths and English where they didn’t have them from school or college.
The Apprentices came from different backgrounds but have all achieved the same outstanding outcome.
They have all enjoyed the apprenticeships and have said:
Amber
” I left school in year 11 without taking any exams. The apprenticeship over delivered. I was not treated like an apprentice, I felt like a worker, part of the team. I loved the gym qualification and finding out about other parts of SCL and the industry from guest speakers. FLM were there 24/7. They adjusted the way it was taught and met my needs. Janine (SCL Duty Manager and my mentor) was a big part of my journey and my rock. I was helped by Helen (Lead Swimming Teacher) with my swimming initially to get me through my NPLQ. I have improved my social skills, learning how to speak to people, meeting different people and different ages. It has reduced my anxiety and increased my confidence. I’ve become an adult. While doing my apprenticeship I have 2 years work experience and all these qualifications all while being paid. I’ve learned to handle money and even saved. In the future I would love to go into Active Lifestyles because it’s one to one and giving back.”
Olivia
“I was sick of college and was about to drop out. I knew I would get qualifications from the apprenticeship through friendships with SCL staff members who had been through the apprenticeship. I am also a keen swimmer, having been part of SCL CTS and Artistic Swimming Squad. I really enjoyed the apprenticeship. It’s given me the qualifications to do my job and given me opportunities to progress in the future. I really enjoy being on shift, doing the job. Being part of a team makes me feel like I’m not alone. I’m proudest of the help I can give to customers, especially the older ones. I’m also proud of my end point assessment where I was being watched doing my job. I didn’t feel I would do as good under the pressure. I felt very supported by FLM. I went to them a lot. They encouraged and motivated me. I have gained in empathy and patience for people. I’m a lot more confident. An apprenticeship is a good opportunity. It is a good alternative to college. You get experience in the workplace as well as learning new knowledge and skills. I now have a swimming teacher contract and I’m applying for other work.”
Keyleigh
“My previous job was in business admin and decided I needed to make a change as I wasn’t happy in an office job. I made the decision to apply for the apprenticeship. It was a great decision. I chose an apprenticeship with SCL because of the number of qualifications available, learning on the job, gaining experience of the leisure industry alongside the qualifications. It was difficult in parts but overall, a good experience. I have enjoyed all the courses, especially working on site with my colleagues and putting my new qualifications to use. I’m proudest of passing all the courses and gaining a distinction as an overall grade. I have gained workplace experience: Dealing with a wide range of people and working as part of a team, using my own initiative has helped my confidence grow. I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship to other young people. It is ideal for young people to learn and gain qualifications whilst in a working environment. I have been offered contracts as a SCL Leisure Team Member and as a Swimming Teacher when I finish my apprenticeship contract.”
