We have something to celebrate from the last group of apprentice Leisure Duty Managers (class of 2024/25).

6 employees were selected for the apprenticeship and 4 achieved distinctions and 2 passes.

From those 6, two have gone on to gain promotions from Leisure Team Member to Duty Manager and Receptionist to Facility Support Officer in Community Centres, outdoor facilities and after school use.

It is great to see that this route and the hard work and enthusiasm of the learners is proving to be rewarding.

“I have just reached my third year working with Salford Community Leisure, I originally applied for just a part time role, however, it quickly advanced into a full time position and I have since stepped up in the Duty Manager Role. My previous roles have mainly revolved around hospitality management and HR but I was keen to take on a new venture after having my children.

HayleyAlthough I was happy in the leisure team member role at the time, I was keen to learn about how to progress to the duty manager role within leisure and gain more knowledge in this industry. The apprenticeship became an opportunity at just the right time for me.

I think it gave me what I was hoping in that I gained skills in the areas I felt were lacking, and I have since been able to put these into practice in my current role.

I enjoyed the group work sessions the most, it was great to catch up with the others on the same journey as me from different areas of SCL.
Managing to hit the deadlines was probably what I felt the proudest of, this may not sound like a huge task but being a parent, working full time and trying to fit all the additional work in was quite challenging at times.

I felt I was well supported in every area, my mentor was there every step of the way and my course leaders where available to offer support if needed. My colleagues were happy to help with any projects and tasks I had to complete and made the journey an interesting one to go on.

I have gained some confidence in myself, having not really done much with my Maths and English qualifications since university I thought I would really struggle with these aspects of the apprenticeship but in fact I came out of it feeling proud of my work and happy with my skill levels.

I would recommend the apprenticeships to anyone wanting to improve on their skill set. ”

“I have worked for Salford Community Leisure for around 6 years now, starting off as a part-time receptionist, and then quickly moving into covering as Duty Manager. The opportunity then came up for me to attend the Leisure Duty Management course, and I felt like this would be a great way of expanding my existing skills and knowledge, along with developing new ones.

I enjoyed the classroom sessions as it was great to work alongside my other SCL colleagues and support each other whenever needed. The FLM tutors were always there to help with assignments and were supportive leading up to our final project and presentation.

I completed the course with a Distinction grade and have now moved into my new role as Facility Support Officer for SCL, managing community facilities.”
